In sleepy Vientiane, a specialty coffee scene is growing to meet the demands of travelers and expats. One of the people pushing this scene forward is French-born expat Micka Perier, the founder and roaster at Le Trio Coffee Vientiane.
Founded mainly as a roasting company, Micka opened his doors to friends and locals who wished to try his 100% Laos Arabica and Robusta coffee blends. As such the roasting house is transforming into a cafe as well, and they have reportedly just installed a Simonelli machine to take their espressos up a notch.
Set on Rue Setthathilath in the downtown tourist district, Le Trio Coffee is a perfect place to stop by and grab a quick espresso. Owner Micka is very welcoming and we had a great chat about the industry in Laos and Thailand while I sampled their espresso. It’s a small shop with only a small amount of seating out-doors, but the most important thing here is the coffee.
I’ve tried their Romance blend both in Laos and in Bangkok at Wonderwall The Kaffebar and the coffee is smooth and honey-like with a very creamy mouth feel to help you savor the flavors. Being a blend of Arabica and Robusta there is a Robusta note on the after-palate especially as the coffee cools, but I find this a robust coffee with plenty of character.
